Dr. Seuss and adoption??!

Would you think zany children's books could have an underlying message of character, integrity and a focus on the sanctity of life?

Anybody a Dr. Suess fan? Honestly, I have found it a struggle to read most of his exhausting, tongue-twisting, wacky books to my children. I love the unique, funny characters, but in the end I was usually left with a cotton-dry mouth, gasping for air, and scratching my head wondering what exactly it was that I just read!

All that changed several months ago when I found two Dr. Seuss books I could believe in! I was listening to a man of God delivering a message about prayer and intercession for our nation. He drew a parallel between Dr. Seuss's book Horton Hears a Who, and the pro life movement. Additionally, he compared Horton Hatches the Egg to adoptive families. Have you read either of these?

In Horton Hears a Who, the kind and lovable elephant Horton hears a voice coming from a speck of dust. He's convinced there's a person living there. The other animals in the Jungle of Nool laugh and poke fun at Horton since they don't believe there's any such creature as small as that, and they try to destroy the dust speck to prove to Horton wrong. Horton has a determined resolve to save his friends because he believes "a person's a person, no matter how small!"

Horton Hatches the Egg brings back this kindhearted elephant. He makes a promise to Mayzie to watch her bird egg, but is surprised when she never returns. Through terrible storms, freezing snow, jeering friends, and the threat of death and misery, he sticks to his promise because "he meant what he said and he said what he meant; an elephant's faithful, one hundred percent." Horton shows us rewards come to those who are patient and loyal.

Can you see the connections??? I'm now a huge Horton fan! These two books are truly worth the read! Something substantial and brimming with the strong character you want your children to have! I bet you won't look at them the same! YOPP!!

Yopp! I love that Dr. Suess parallel! Chelle - You left a very moving comment on my blog. I humbly thank you and praise God that He can use a nobody like me to glorify Himself. My love for Jesus is beyond measure in gratitude. I wrote a entry in my family blog (www.jillyann1.spaces.live.com) called Dress Up. I was a princess in the mud puddle for too long..and I am so thankful for His goodness in lifting me out! I remember seeing your picture on the Holt site! It is nice to have the privelege to pray for those we only know through God's heart! I am praying for a quick process for you and perseverence during the wait! Blessings, Jill (Holt BB)
